I've just read on Normblog that Luciano Pavarotti has passed.

I'm saddened. I was a devoted fan of his. He had such talent and his voice brought much happiness to billions of people all over the world.

This is a favourite, a rare and unforgettable jocular moment, too, among Pavarotti and three other greats of the music world, at the first Three Tenors Concert at Baths of Caracalla in Rome. That smile of surprise and delight defines the image of the man in my mind:
