Guardian Comment is Free on Jane Austen...
What's with this Jane Austen fixation? Her women were spirited, yes, but their lives were miserable
Girls, it's time we grew up. Darcy ain't coming, and if he did, you'd want to slap him in the face and stamp on his head till he bleeds

Gold's take on Jane Austen is derived from movies made from Austen's novels, and the bad movies at that. It is obvious she has not read any of the novels, or if she read one, it would have been because she was fotced to, in highchool or something.
What is a possible analogy for measuring the extent of her distortions?
Imagine anyone learning and opining about America or Israel from reading only and nothing but the Guardian on the subject.
Well, I cant say that Im more informed than Gold, as I havent been able to make it through one Jane Austen movie, let alone play or book.
