How many times in the last six or seven years have we heard such descriptions and reports of atrocities? I've been thinking how sheltered we, in the West, had been before this kind of violence was thrust into our awareness on 9/11? Who could have imagined that reading about beheadings, mutilations, public executions of gays and stoning of women for suspected adultery, remote control detonation of mentally-retarded women, would become just another item on our daily dose of news around the world?
