Two weeks ago, the American professor Marcel Kalmann spent a few days is Bruges. After he went into a café, he took off his hat, and his kipah showed up. When the waiter saw this, he showed him the door: “We don’t serve Jews here, out”, the waiter is reported to have said.

Kalmann told his story in another café and then the police was called. He was advised to go to the police station. There he wanted to file a complaint in English, but that was refused.

“Joods Actueel” writes “The young police officer let him know that he did not believe his story and he refused to file the complaint in English”. Another officer confirmed that the American Professor had to make his declaration in Dutch. At the end, no complaint was filed, but there was a formal hearing.

The professor wants to file a complaint with the “Comité P”, the supervising body of the Belgian police. Patrick Moenaert, the mayor of Bruges, has ordered an investigation to find out what had exactly happened.

He apologises to Kalmann for any inappropriate behavior that does not fit with the city's vision openness and foreigner-friendliness. According to “Joods Actueel”, the tourist office of the city of Bruges plans to open a complaint procedure

'Wij serveren hier geen joden'

BRUGGE - BRUSSEL - Een Amerikaanse jood heeft in Brugge te maken gekregen met antisemitisme in een café. Toen de man klacht wou indienen bij de politie vond hij geen gehoor. Dat schrijft het maandblad Joods Actueel in zijn editie die morgen verschijnt.

De Amerikaanse professor Marcel Kalmann was twee weken geleden enkele dagen in Brugge. Toen hij in een café op de Brugse markt zijn hoed af deed, kwam zijn keppeltje bloot. Toen de ober dat opmerkte, wees hij de man de deur. 'Wij serveren hier geen joden, eruit', zou de man gezegd hebben.

Daarop stapte Kalmann een andere horecazaak binnen. Hij vertelde zijn verhaal, waarna de politie gebeld werd. Er werd gezegd dat de man best naar het politiekantoor kon komen. Daar wou de man zijn verklaring in het Engels afleggen, maar dat mocht niet.

'De jonge politiebeambte maakte duidelijk dat ze zijn verhaal niet geloofde, en liet hem niet toe zijn verklaring in het Engels af te leggen', schrijft Joods Actueel. Een bijgeroepen politieman stelde vervolgens dat de Amerikaanse professor zijn verklaring in het Nederlands moest afleggen. Uiteindelijk werd geen klacht ingediend, maar werd een verhoor afgenomen.

De professor wil nu klacht indienen bij het Comité P, dat toezicht uitoefent op de politiediensten. Burgemeester Patrick Moenaert heeft de politie de opdracht gegeven om na te gaan wat zich precies heeft voorgedaan. Hij excuseert zich tegenover Kalmann voor elk ongepast gedrag dat niet overeenstemt met de visie van het stadsbestuur op een gastvrije stad.
