La Place Theodor Herzl

Delanoë:

"The creation of your state certifies that in spite of everything, right and freedom remain accessible to will. It is in order to pay tribute to this accomplished miracle that we gave the name of Theodor Herzl, who inspired the state of Israel, to a square in Paris,” he added.

The mayor of Paris declared that Israel, which celebrates this year the 60th anniversary of its creation, had written "a new page of the right of the people to self-determination.”

... à l’occasion du centième anniversaire de la réhabilitation d’Alfred Dreyfus, Bertrand Delanoë, le maire de Paris et Pierre Aidenbaum, le maire du IIIe arrondissement, ont inauguré, mercredi 5 juillet, la place Theodor Herzl, en présence de Raphaël Barak chargé d’affaires à l’ambassade d’Israël.

... Theodor Herzl avait suivi ... le procès du capitaine Dreyfus et assisté à sa dégradation dans la cour de l’école militaire en 1895. Ce procès devait donner l’idée à Theodor Herzl de la fondation d’un Etat juif, dont il décrivit les grandes lignes dans son livre « Der Judenstaadt » (L’Etat Juif). Par la suite, Theodor Herzl fonda le mouvement sioniste, dont le but fut d’organiser le foyer national juif. Mais il mourut en 1904, soit deux ans avant la réhabilitation de Dreyfus et 44 ans avant la fondation de l’Etat d’Israël.

La place Theodor Herzl est située dans le IIIe arrondissement de Paris, à l’angle de la rue Turbigo et de la rue Réaumur. En juin 2004, le Conseil de Paris avait voté à l’unanimité la proposition de donner à une artère de Paris le nom du fondateur du sionisme. De nombreuses personnalités du monde politique (de l’UMP aux Verts) étaient présentes à l’inauguration ainsi que les principaux responsables de la communauté juive.

Theodor Herzl had covered ... the Dreyfus trial, and was present at the ceremony of his dishonourable discharge at the military courtyard in 1895. It was this trial that triggered in Theodor Herzl the idea of a Jewish State, which he described in general terms in his book "Der Judenstaadt" (the Jewish State).

Later, Theodor Herzl founded the Zionist movement, which aimed at establishing a national home for the Jewish people. He died in 1904, two years before Dreyfus’s name was restored, and 44 years before the foundation of the State of Israel.
