Bernard Henri Levy on a list of Jews targeted by Islamist group

Jewish-French philosopher Bernard Henri-Levy was listed by a Belgium-based Islamist group as a target for assassination alongside other leading Jewish personalities in Europe, the Belgian daily La Derniere Heure reported earlier this week.

The planned assassination was apparently thwarted after group leader Abdelkader Belliraj, a Belgian of Moroccan ascent, was arrested last February in Morocco, the newspaper reported. [-]

The hit list mentioned the names of five other well-know Jewish figures in Belgium and France: Josy Eisenberg, producer of the A Bible ouverte (Open Bible) television program on FR2; Simone Susskind, a leader of Belgium's secular Jewish community; attorney Markus Pardes, president of the International Association of Jewish lawyers and jurists; Belgian writer Jean-Claude Bologne and La Derniere Heure reporter Edmond Blattche.

BRUXELLES Le 27 novembre, le parquet fédéral belge faisait interpeller onze suspects soupçonnés d'être liés en Belgique à l'affaire Belliraj. Le domicile de Belliraj avait déjà été perquisitionné. Un document saisi fait l'objet d'un examen particulier : il comprend une liste de six personnalités juives vivant en France et en Belgique.

Une liste qui jette l'effroi, Abdelkader Belliraj étant en aveux au Maroc d'avoir exécuté personnellement deux Juifs en 1988 à Bruxelles et commandité quatre autres assassinats en Belgique en 1989 et 1990, dont celui du Dr Wybran sur le parking de l'hôpital Erasme. Tous les suspects interpellés le mois passé sont interrogés sur cette liste.

L'un des six noms est celui du prédécesseur du Dr Wybran à la tête du Comité de Coordination des Organisations Juives de Belgique , un autre celui de l'épouse du successeur du Dr Wybran au CCOJB entre 1993 et 1996.

Plusieurs suspects du réseau soupçonnés d'avoir participé à quatre des six meurtres commis à Bruxelles entre 1988 et 1990 ont continué de vivre en Belgique et s'y trouvaient toujours le mois passé.

Faut-il accréditer l'hypothèse d'un réseau dormant susceptible d'être réveillé ? La police belge sait que le mobile juif de Belliraj n'a pas disparu après l'assassinat du Dr Wybran le 3 octobre 1990. Selon nos sources toujours, elle est informée qu'une personnalité juive de Casablanca, M. Baby Azenkot, a même fait l'objet en 1996 d'un attentat au Maroc.

Simone Susskind , cofondatrice avec son mari David Susskind d u Centre Communautaire laïc juif .

De notre confrère Edmond Blattchen , qui anime l'émission Noms de dieux (où il a reçu des personnalités comme l'Abbé Pierre et le Dalaï-lama).

De Markus Pardes , président de l'International Association of Jewish Lawyers and Jurists .

Du rabbin Josy Eisenberg (producteur et réalisateur de la plus ancienne émission de télé française, A Bible ouverte sur FR2, et coscénariste de Rabbi Jacob ).

Du romancier et journaliste belge vivant à Paris Jean-Claude Bologne , secrétaire général de la Société des Gens de lettres .

Et du philosophe et polémiste français Bernard-Henri Levy.

About 200-250 AEL sympathizers showed up in the Kerkstraat in Borgerhout at 2pm in order to protest the bombing of the Gaza Strip. Bastiaenssens says that it was agreed with the organizers that the demonstration will be 'static'. In other words, that the protesters would stay in the Kerkstraat. After 20 minutes a number of youth wanted to move into the city. They attack a passing bus and a police car. The organizers and older people managed to talk to them and bring them back to the square in front of the church.

When the demonstration disbanded at 3pm, a big group of hot-heads marched through the Turnhoutsebaan to the Astrid Park Plaza. They tried to reach the Jewish neighborhood through there, but the police had closed off that entrance. A second attempt through the Van Ertbornstraat and the Quellinstraat streets followed, but also there the protesters were blocked. The attempts to get into the Jewish neighborhood were coupled with riots. The protesters threw stones, trash bags and street signs at the police agents and destroyed here and there car and shop windows.
