Nonie Darwish speaks at Berekely

Watch her interviewed by Al-Jazeera, here.

Solomonia has a post. Interestingly, this is what one comment says:

As a part of "Islamofascism Awareness Week", Nonie Darwish spoke at U.C. Berkeley on October 22. As usual, Islamofascists and their Dhimmi supporters have shown their unwavering resolve to crush any type of dissent. One the members of the "Students for Justice in Palestine" claimed that the purpose of the "Islamofascism Awareness Week" is to reinvigorate anti-Muslim and anti-Arab campaign. Given the fact that the speaker, Nonie Darwish, is both Muslim and Arab it truly shows the depth of brainwashing on campus.

Why is it interesting? Because the Insane Left, given the choice between Nonnie Darwish's Islamic message of peace and tolerance and the self-appointed Islamic rejectionists of peace and compromise represented by these "Islamofascists and their Dhimmi supporters", will opt to root for the latter.

________

Bob succinctly puts the moral emphasis where it belongs:

It takes no courage to heckle a meeting. But it takes very great courage to be Nonie Darwish.

_________

Another similarly bizarre alliance was noted by Terry Galvin, here:

It's about the shameful absence in Canada of any effective solidarity with Iran's pro-democracy forces. And sure enough, one of the first responses contains the accusation that the column is "neocon propaganda," which perfectly confirms Samira Mohyeddin's observations, and my own, and Danny Postel's, too.

Many Canadians tend to define themselves as what they are not. The most popular thing not to be these days is American. With the outrageous result that active support for promotion of democracy in Muslim countries, especially women's rights, is seen as helping and abetting the Bush administration's "neo-con" campaign. It is a horrible travesty of the saying: the enemy of my enemy is my friend. It is like saying my friend who my enemy supports becomes my enemy, too. At least de facto, if not in pure intent.

_______

Another example, via Oliver Kamm:

.. "All over Europe, there are Muslims who are exercising their right in a free society to change their religion, or to become atheists. And they are regularly being threatened, beaten, and burned-out, while the police largely stand by, inert."

The bravery of these ex-Muslims is remarkable, and I pay tribute to them. One of them, whom Johann interviews, is an Iranian dissident, Mina Ahadi, who was awarded the title "Secularist of the Year" by the National Secular Society at the weekend. ... It's still more extraordinary how scant, or at least how quiet, is the support for their cause among progressive organisations.

The Daily Angry

"When people invoke their Zionism advocacy in their writings (like Lewis and Ajami and others) they lose it completely and forget about the scientific method or even basic logic."

Thus intones my favourite Arab intellectual, Prof. Abu Khalil, he who is a professor of political science at California State University, Stanislaus and visiting professor at UC, Berkeley:

This high standard for writing, coming from the Angry Arab stupefied me. As a short perusal of his heavily loaded "news" service will show you,  a concern for scientific method or basic logic is not exactly a strong aspect of his writing.

A few examples:

The self proclaimed anarchist's idiosyncrasies

The writer who cannot comprehend what he reads

No such thing as  logic or scientific verification of fact where Israelis are concerned

The basic logic of AbuKhalil's priorities

And the list goes on ...

_______________

Update a day later: AbuKhalil's scientific method and basic logic of writing at its most evident:

" I usually avoid mentioning those types: those handful of Arabs who do tours and gigs for Zionist entertainment.  I tell Arabs that they should be ignored.  Of course, Saudi media now take orders from Zionist handlers in the US--yes, I believe that and please call me conspiratorial--I mean that.  So someone called Noona Darwish was on Al-Arabiyya (the news station of King Fahd's brother-in-law) but she was interviewed by one of the few able journalists there, Hasan Mu`awwad.  He grilled her and it was a Zionist fiasco.  Her Arabic is halting, and he would ask her questions about things she said in her books and she would not be able to answer and clearly revealed that she did not write a word that is attributed to her (like the Cicero of Damascus: her English is atrocious but we are led to believe that he writes long articles for the New Republic).  She would make claims about Islam and she would not be able to back them up.  Mu`awwad would ask her for reference and she would hold a book to the camera but would not be able to even read from it or cite what she wants to say from it.  It was rather a comedy.  I don't think that Zionists had this in mind when they put her on the network.  I must say that Mu`awwad seemed very pleased to mock her for the entire show and expose her for what she is.  Ha."

You will note that this "news" item is merely a tirade full of sarcastic commentary and not one verifiable example of the claims being made in this post. You will also note that there is no  link to any source whatsoever.

So here is a link to an article posted on Al-Arabiya News website (it was easy to google once you adjust AbuKhalil's insistence on the phonetic spelling of Arabic names to the way these names are actually spelled in the media; thus Noona Darwish can be found under Nonie Darwish and Al-Arabiya has only one "y" in it)).

When you read the article and the quotes provided by the author of what Darwish said, AbuKhalil's  reluctance to apply the scientific method will become self-explanatory.

From an interview with Egyptian-American writer Nonie Darwish, on Al-Hayat TV on August 7, 2008:

They made us believe in violence, and believe that we did not want any foreigners, and that we wanted to kill them and drive them out. I felt that this was a natural thing.... for us Arabs, fighting was very important... Towards the end of the sermons in the mosques, they curse people. They curse [non-Muslims], saying: "God, make their children orphans. May God curse America, England, and the infidels." Do people go to the mosque to hear words that make them calm, or words that make him nervous and stressed? ... I had a Christian friend, a Copt, who lived next to the mosque... we were studying together, and we heard the sermon, which ended with the words: "God, curse the infidels, the polytheists, the non-Muslims, the Jews, and the Christians." This Christian girl sat next to me and heard every word.... , I heard these things ..... We used to think that cursing the non-Muslims was a good, divine thing.... She didn't say a word, but I could see the fear on her face. That's when I began to feel that there was something wrong with my religion. Why do they teach hatred?

Palestinian child indoctrination into jihadist death adoration did not start with Israel's occupation, or checkpoints or "The Wall".

M.E.M.R.I. posts some interesting snapshots from Middle Eastern media:

First:

"Interviewer:

Do you agree that as a rule,
peoples whose lands have been occupied have the right to conduct resistance and
to fight?"

Nonie Darwish:

"As Arab countries, we must grant
Israel some security. From the days of Abd Al-Nasser until today, with
Ahmadinejad in Iran, all they hear is that we want to throw Israel into the sea.
All they hear are ugly things. Can you believe that we accused Israel of 9/11?
In mosques in America, Egypt, and the Arab countries, they say that Israel was
the cause of 9/11. It is wrong for the Muslims to say such things about
Israel."

Watch the video, here. A must-see!

Then:

Turkish Radio and TV Council Issues Warning to Turkish Radio
Stations for Broadcasting Islamist Messages and Calling for Jihad.

""My dear brother, there is no such thing as 'religions.' There is
no other religion to which Islam is superior. Islam is the one and only religion
in universe."[...]

And then:

When we wanted to explain the value of our faith, [why
didn't we launch] social initiatives... or harness our economic resources to
inform the world about the noble nature of Islam and shari'a? Nothing [of this
sort] was done, except for a few conferences organized by Muslim preachers - and
even this came only after the situation had deteriorated.

"These conferences did not have as much impact as the
actions of the rabble... the bombing of buildings, the abduction of innocent
people, and the murder of peaceful individuals. These spread more quickly and
made a greater impression than lectures aimed at changing [the Western
perception of Islam]...

"Our insistence [on reacting] by
chopping off heads is a paradigm no less dangerous to humanity than paradigms
like Nazism and Fascism. Why isn't there a single Muslim who has not heard about
the [offensive] cartoons [of the Prophet Mohammad] - but when [a Belgian paper]
plans to print and distribute translations of our Holy book [the Koran], this is
taken for granted?..."

As pro-Western, pro-democracy voices manage to rise above the angry murmur of rejectionist Arab-Muslim populism, with such fierce speakers as Nonie Darwish and Buthayna Nasser , Ali Hirsi Ali and Irshad Manji, some media outlets will not support their struggle. Why aren't there more liberal thinkers, activists and general palaverers more involved in giving their support to moderate, reasonable, freedom-craving Muslims? Where are they? Instead, what we get is silencing, nixing of programmes as in the following example. I ask, is this not the modern version of book-burning?

Producer Martyn Burke claims that PBS, in order to be
allowed to continue with the project, tried to make him fire some of his
associates on the film because they belong to a Conservative Think Tank and that
they still axed his film anyway when all was said and done.

So, what is all the fuss over with this film?

Burke wrote that his documentary depicts the plight of moderate Muslims
who are silenced by Islamic extremists, adding,

"Now it appears to be PBS and CPB who are silencing them."

Apparently PBS, is so afraid of even appearing to say that some
Muslims' actions are problematic that they would rather suppress the whole show
then deal with the truth.

Subtitled Voices From the Muslim Center, Burke says his film "attempts
to answer the question: 'Where are the moderate Muslims?' The answer is,
'Wherever they are, they are reviled and sometimes attacked' " by extremists.
